MARKETS FOR FRUIT
EXTENSION IN THE EAST.
GOVERNMENT AID SOUGHT. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 26. The necessity for the extension of markets for the fruit growing industry was emphasised at the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board conference to-day, when a remit was under consideration to the effect that the Government be urged to assist the Board in reopening the markets in Germany and France for New Zealand fruit.
Mr J. L. Brown, of Nelson, in supporting the remit, said that difficulty lay in the fact that there was no reciprocal trade. New Zealand bought little, from Germany and less from France.
The remit was carried, with another asking that an endeavour be made to secure a guarantee on experimental fruit and fruit shipped to new markets, sufficient to cover the cost of production.
Mr,.R. Paynter, the chairman, stated that the Board had recently had an inquiry from Calcutta for 2000 cases of apples, and another inquiry had been received from Hong Kong for apples, the price being very satisfactory—namely, 16s a case. Unfortunately, the Board had no stocks to supply these markets, and it might be that in future the Board would have to hold stocks in order to fill orders of this nature. It was essential to develop new markets if possible, and to be able to meet the demand when it arose, particularly in. view of the possibility of a contraction of the United Kingdom market.
