WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
THE ASHBURTON DISTRICT The Ashburton District Women’s Institute met yesterday afternoon, Mrs D. Fitzgerald (vice-president) presiding over a large attendance. A vote of sympathy with Mrs F. Curtis (president) in the death of Mrs Curtis, senior, and a similar vote with the relatives of the late Nurse Maude, were carried in silence.
Songs were sung by Mrs Donaldson, who also led the community singing, and Miss Thekla Cullen, and a monologue and a recitation were given by Miss Jean Rattray, The performers were thanked.
A talk on first aid was given by Miss E. J. Watt (Matron of the Ashburton Hospital), who was heartily thanked. Competitions were decided as follow :—Marmalade, Mrs L. Hill 1, Mrs Graham'and Mrs Joyce (equal) 2; bloom, Mrs F. It. Brown 1. Hostesses were Mesdames Gresham, Clark, Frew, Rickard, Baker and Hefford and Miss Hambly.
