Mr L. J. Berry, of Wellington (secretary of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association), was a visitor to Ashburton to-day.

The Rev. G. B. Hinton, who was called to Palmerston North on account of the illness of his mother, returned to Ashburton by the south-bound express train this morning.

Ae a meeting of the 'newly-formed Ashburton branch of the Legion of Frontiersmen last evening, Mr E. M. Gabites was appointed 0.C., with the rank of Captain, and the Ven. Archdeacon A. J. Petrie was appointed Padre, also with the rank of Captain.

Mr W. S. Kerr (chairman of the Ashburton East School Committee) has ■been appointed the Canterbury Education Board’s representative on the Ashburton Technical High. School Board of Managers in succession to Mr L. A. Charles, who will retire next month.

Mr W. Burton (general manager of Fuller Hayward Theatres), accompanied by Messrs Mawson (architect) and Graham (builder), paid ,a. visit to Ashburton this morning in connection with the reconstruction of His Majesty’s Theatre, which will henceforward be known as the St. James’ Theatre.

The Hon. R. Masters (Minister of Industries and Commerce), stated today that Mr L. J. Schmidt, who was recently appointed permanent head of the Department, had been appointed Chairman of the Wheat Purchase Board, in succession to Mr G. W. Clinkard, who will shortly take up duties as New Zealand Trade representative in Europe.

Members of the staff of the Ashburton Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., met this morning, and on behalf of the directors Mr L. R. Clarke (general manager) presented Miss E. M. Hydes with a small token of their esteem. On behalf of the staff, Mr E. Keig (factory manager) presented Mr O. A. Spicer and Miss Hydes with two seagrass chairs, the occasion being the eve of their marriage.

The Assistant-Director of the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture, Mr W. T. Goodwin, has been seconded for a term of duty with the Cook Islands Administration. He will take up his appointment of Director of Agriculture for the Cook Islands, with headquarters at Rarotonga. He will exercise supervision over the other islands, and will leave Wellington for Rarotonga on September 3. Mr Goodwin succeeds Mr O. J. Boucher, a former (Director of Agriculture at the Islands, who was the victim of the hurricane which swept the Cook group last February. While attempting to save Government property, he was struck by a huge wave and was-injured, necessitating amputation of a, leg. He subsequently died.
