SHEEP STOLEN
HARD LABOUR FOR 18 MONTHS.
(Per Press Association). , AUCKLAND, July 28. A sentence of 18 months’ imprison nient with hard labour was passed by Mr Justice Fair to-day on William Reginald Hamilton, aged 35, who pleaded guilty to charges of stealing eight sheep, the property of a farmer in the Whangarei district. He shot the sheep and used the meat to supply men working under contract for him in a bush-felling camp. Counsel' vsaid the prisoner was a hat'd worker, and the owner of the sheep was willing to employ him alter he had carried out the sentence oi the Court. His Honor said that sheep-stealing was in almost every case a serious offence, because it was difficult to detect. It was aggravated in the case of a man in prisoner’s position. He had a number of young Maoris in his charge in camp. He had tried to persuade otliers to join him in stealing sheep, and it was to their credit that they refused. The sentence must bo substantial.
