WATERS RECEDE
FLOODS IN NORTH AUCKLAND.
(Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, July 25
After half a. week of floods, communication with the north by road and rail returned almost to normal on most routes to-day.
The weather was fine during the day, and although rain fell in the evening, the fall in the areas affected by the flooding was only slight up to a late hour, and it is expected that, unless there is again a heavy downpour, all the roads will be open for traffic again to-morrow. The water has receded from the railway tracks, and full services are now being run, although at reduced speeds over some of the sections where slips or washouts have occurred.
The rainfall in the city for the month to date is 9.40 inches, which is close to the record total of 9.59 inches in July, 191/.
A water main carrying a supply from the city side of the harbour to Birkenhead, burst at Westmere this morning, and the water gushed to a height of 00 foet-until the supply was cut oil'. No serious damage was done.
