LAND SETTLEMENT
ACTIVITIES IN WAIKATO. / (Per Press Association). HAMILTON, July 22. A resume of the activities of the Waikato Land Settlement Society was made by Mr D. V. Bryant, founder and chairman of directors, in an address to the Hamilton Rotary Club to-day. A total of £10,592 had been spent in land, while horses, harness and plant involved an expenditure or £3410, and a sum of £6439 had been spent in wages, portion of which was found by the Unemployment Board. The cost of buildings ran into £6127. On the 6000 acres owned by the society, 32 homesteads had been erected, in addition to 12 three-roomed hutments. Mr Bryant said that at a recent meeting of the society’s directors, a proposal was considered whereby the settlement scheme could be extended. The Minister for Employment had been written to, with a suggestion that the unemployed could be _ tried out and trained on the society’s settlements, and, if proved satisf actcn y, could be recommended for farm positions. The Unemployment Board would he required to pay the men s wages while they were employed on the society’s settlement.
