SIR JOHN MACFARLANE. (United Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Sir John Macfarlane, Chancellor of the University of Melbourne is dead. Sir John Macfarlane was well known in New Zealand, where every year he spent a month trout-fishing in lakes and! rivers. He served the University in its highest posts and was remarkable for his ability as an administrator.

Slie took an active interest m the affairs of the district, being leader of the Willowby Mutual Improvement Society, a vice-president of the tennis club, and member of the Willow byEiffelton Women’s Institute. A feature of her school work was the agricultural side of the children’s education and school gardening. Last • year Miss Lloyd was president of the Mid-Canter-bury Educational Institute. Miss Lloyd was for some years Willowby correspondent of the “Ashburton Guaidia.n,” being one of its most valued contributors. Mrs H. Ede (Kimberley) and Mrs Asiiby (Christchurch) are her sisters.
