ASHBURTON STOCK SALE.

BETTER LINES SCARCE TO-DAY.

PRICES SHOW LITTLE VARIATION

There was a scarcity of the better class of' fat sheep at the Ashburton 'saleyards to-day for the weekly market. Prices generally showed little variation, however, compared with, rates a week At the commencement of the market sales were difficult to effect, and there were a number of passings. When the good quality animals were offered more interest was taken by butchers, and some high figures were recorded. Mr E. Hampton (Pendarves) was the most successful vendor of fat ewes, making sales of three at 18s Id, four at 17s Id and four at 16s Id. Mr W. H- King (Winchmore) disposed of six at 14s lOd, and several other pens reached over 14s. In the fat wether section Mr Hampton was also a prominent vendor. Five and three auctioned on his behalf made 25s 7d and 25s 4d respectively. Mr J. Hunter (Ashburton) received 24s Id for 10, 22s 4d for five, and 22s Id for four, while another client disposed of one at 22s 3d. Fat lambs made up to 26s lOd, Mr A. THE WOOL MARKETS. FIRM TONE AT LONDON SALES. • (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, May 13. At the wool sales 9822 bales were offered, including 1682 New Zealand. A total of 4586 Australian and New Zealand were sold. There was a satisfactory clearance with sustained Home and Continental competition, and a firm tone. ' . The market for mermos, comebacks and quarterbreds advanced by 5 per cent, compared with the closing rafe of the last sales. PRICES RISE AT BRISBANE. (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. Wools offered at the opening of the eleventh series of the wool sales were of finer quality than those offered last week. Skirtings rose appreciably in price, while greajsy was 5 per cent, dearer than the closing rates iast week. Scoured was firm. Practically a total clearance of the 12,660 bales offered was made.
