SEAFIELD IRRIGATION WORK.

OPERATIONS TO BE CONTINUED. REPLIES FROM MR RANSOM. Telegrams received by Mr J. Connolly, M.P., the Ashburton Borough Council, the Ashburton County Council, the Ashburton Chamber of Commerce, ihe Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Mid-Can-terbury Provincial executive of the Farmers' Union from the Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) indicate that the rumours current on Saturday that the experimental work at the special irrigation farm at Seafield was to cease are unfounded. The operations will continue as before. Mr Connolly was in Christchurch when ho learned of the statement regarding the discontinuance4)f the work and he at once telegraphed to the act-ing-Prime Minister protesting against any such action. The local bodies referred to also telegraphed a protest. The following telegram, received by Mr Connolly, is the same as those sent to the local bodies:

s 'Your telegram received. The rumours referred to are incorrect. The control of irrigation at Seafield: is being undertaken by the Lands Department. Operations will continue and records will be kept."
