METHVEN. . The Methven Cricket Club held a very enjoyable and well-attended dance in the Anglican Hall on Saturday evening. Although the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting was postponed there was a number* of visitors to the township, and these helped to swell the attendance at the dance. Music was provided by Cook’s orchestra, extras being played by Miss Ida Petrie. Mr W. M. Holland was master of ceremonies. Mr Holland, on behalf of the club, thanked: all who had assisted to make the function a success. The dance was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” RAKAIA , There was a good attendance at the Rakaia Football Club’s weekly social and .card evening held in St. Mark’s Schoolroom on Saturday evening. The winners at euchre were Mrs R,.'Tatterson and Mr J. Stevenson. Music for the dance was played by Mr T. Lawler. Extras were played by Miss E. Kidd. Mr R. Douglas was master of ceremonies. HIN DS. There was a fair congregation at St. Luke’s Church yesterday morning, when the monthly family service was held. The weather over the week-end was dull and cold, with a few light showers on Saturday. This morning was bright and sunny. , CHERTSEY.

The popularity of the Chertsey Social Club’s evening was again show'll by the large attendance in the Ohertsey Hall on Saturday night. Mr Andrew Doig controlled the games. The women’s prize w T as won by Miss Madge Cameron with 135 points, Miss Leoni Cain being second with 134 points. Mr H. Cox won the men’s prize with 141 points, Mr Allan. Doig being second with 134 points. The Rakaia. Football Club met to farewell one of its most popular members, Mr Ivan Behrnes, who is leaving Chertsey to take up his residence in Christchurch. Mr Andrew Doig presented him with a well-filled wallet from the members of the club and his many Chertsey friends. Mr C. Davison (captain of the club) also spoke. The music for the dance which folknved was supplied by Mr J. Behrnes. Mr Allan Doig was M.C.

• MAYFIELD. A special meeting of the Mayfield Women’s Institute was held in the Band Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs D. J. Morrow presided. A .vote -of sympathy was passed with Mesdames G. J. and A. Murdoch in the death of their sister. Programmes for the year were prepared by the various circle conveners. It was decided to take part in the historical pageant to be held in Timaru toward the end of the year. After the business members adjourned to the river-bed and planted bulbs and other plants on eithe r side of the bridge, with the idea of beautifying the countryside. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Mayfield branch of the Farmers’ Union. The balancesheet showed a credit of £5 8s on the year’s working. It was agreed to draw up a syllabus for the monthly meetings. It was decided to stand by the decision to retain the embargo on live stock im-, ported from England. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr G. Johnston; vice-president, Mr W. Turner; secretary, Mr A. Fleming (re-elected) j treasurer, Mr J. A. Fleming; delegates to Mid-Canterbury Executive, the president, vice-presi-dent, Mr F. R. Morrow' and secretary; auditor, Mr Guiney (re-elected). It was decided to donate £5 toward the executive fund. A committee to convene meetings and act as a social committee was elected as follow's: The president, vice-president, secretary and Messrs F. R. Morrow,and R. Oakley. Mr R. Oakley (president of the MidCanterbury Executive and delegate to the 1 Dominion Conference) g¥lve an outline of business at Dominion headquarters. ' In reference to an outbreak of strangles in the district, it w r as decided to ask the Stock Inspector to publish an article giving treatment in combating the complaint.
