BOY SCOUTS.

THE ST. STEPHEN’S TROOP. ACTIVITIES DURING APRIL. The activities of the St. Stephen’s troop of Boy Scouts have been somewhat varied during April. Each parade night has been taken up with preparations for the parents’ evening. The roll now numbers 34 Scouts. Hie recruits are doing very well, and three of them have passed, the Tenderfoot tests.

A camp was held on the property of Mr G. F. Suttie, of Greenstreet, during tiie Easter holidays. Those who attended nui|ibered 21. They were divided into three separate patrols, and each patrol cooked for itself. In this way much valuable training in. camp-craft was gained, for the boys in each patrol took it in turns to cook, and, in a small group like the patrol, received several turns. This system also was particularly beneficial to the patrol-leaders, who were constantly having to deal with problems concerning their patrols. Those in charge of the camp were highly pleased with tlie week. In spite of the unfavourable weather conditions which existed throughout the camp, there was very little disruption. Camp, especially in cold weather, never fails to show up the boys in tlieir true colours. The Scoutmaster (Mr A. M. Meredith) has been handed a full report on the conduct and efficiency of every Scout who attended. Many parents arid interested friends visited the camp on Easter Sunday, when they were provided with a cup of camp tea. The chairman of the committee (Mr W. C. J. Osman) expressed his satisfaction with the camp. On Easter Monday, the secretary (Mrs A. T. Saunders) and Mr Saunders visited the camp and treated the ooys to a sumptuous tea. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks in real camp manner.

Camp was broken on Saturday, when, in spite of the rain, the majority of the hoys quitted the site about 9.30 a.m. All the Scouts were concerned to hear of the Scoutmaster’s mishap. While engaged at work he injured his foot and this will prevent his attending parade for some time.

Wolf Cubs. Cubmistress M. Carson, of No. 2 Pack, and Assistant-Cubinistress (>. Spedding, attended a training camp in Christchurch over Easter, and have now commenced the work of passing on their newly-acquired knowledge to their respective packs. Seconds Alan Green,Russell Kingsbury and Colin Glossop attended the 'Scout camp and will now he in a position to instruct tlieir Sixes in campcraft. One or two Cubs were successful in the First Star tests.
