ENTERTAINMENTS.

MAJESTIC THEATRE. Patrons of the Majestic Theatre will to-night have their final opportunity to view George Arliss in “The Affairs of Voltaire,” a picture'in which considerable interest has been taken. It tells a vivid tale in a vivid way, and the acting of Arliss is on a plane with anything he has so far given to the silver screen. The chief actor has the support of a large and talented: cast headed by Doris Kenyon. The suppoiting programme is varied and interesting, and among the films is one depicting a day in the life of the famous Dionne quintuplets. There are many excellent scenes showing the babies at all stages of their day, together with the doctor, the nurses and the special hospital: built for them.

ASHBURTON MUSICAL CLUB. The 1935 season of the' Ashburton Musical Club was opened on Saturday with an own selection evening. Miss A. Ruddock, who arranged' the programme, chose as the subject for her talk the life of Theresa Carreno. The following programme was given by members: —'Piano solo, “Impromptu” '(Chopin), Miss G. Woods; vocal solo, “Silent Noon” (VaughanWilliams), Miss M. Allen; piano solo, “Finlandia” (Sibelius), Miss L. Petrie ; violin solo, “Allegro Moderato” (Schubert), Mrs W. McDonald; vocal solo, “Less Than the Dust” (Finden), Miss H. Drummond; piano solo, “Romance” (Sibelius), Miss J. Haslam ; instrumental trio (Weber), Mrs A. C. Williams, Airs W. McDonald and Air J. W. Wood; piano solo, “Novelette in F” (Schumann), Aliss AI. Jennings; ’cello solos, “Berceuse” (Jarnfeldt) and “Habanera” (Ravel), Miss AI. Dunn; piano solo, “Alinuet” (Moskowski), Mrs A. C. Williams; viola solos, “Nocturnes 1 and 3” (Kalliwoda), Air J. W. Wood; vocal sole, “Ave Alaria” (Schubert), Airs A. T. Smith. The hostesses were Airs W. Thomas and Aliss W. Andrew.

CARD AND DAN6E SOCIAL. There was a very large attendance at the Druids’ card , and dance social on Saturday evening. Airs Harper won the special card prize and was first for the ladies’ award. The second prize was divided between Alesdames E. Patterson and L. Keeley. Air Phillips won'the men’s prize, Mr C. E. Challis being second. For the dance, music was supplied: by Dabourn’s orchestra, Aliss Alai Willers playing the extras. The lucky spot was won by Aliss Burton and Air Dailey, and the Monte Carlo by Airs Carbon and Air Webster. The M.C.’s were Alessrs A. I. Garriock and T. A. Miller,
