OBITUARY.
MR W. G. PATEfiSON. Through the death of Mr William Gordon Paterson, of Mayfield, Canterbury has lost one of its well-known and respected residents. Mr Paterson was born in Courtenay in 1572, and was the son of the late Mr Thomas Paterson, of Kirkcudbright, Scotland, a descendant of the "Gordon Clan." Mr Paterson, with his parents, went to Lismore at the age of 12, wliere his father managed a farm for Mr Percy Cox, of Ashburton. Some years later he purchased a farm at Riverside, where Mr Paterson gained an his faming experience. Afterwards he himself bought a block of 500 acres at Westerfield, and since then has had charge of various farms. Mr Paterson will long be remembered by his friends by his quiet and unassuming manner. He married the daughter of the late Mr Jeffrey Williams, "Waikawa" Station, Southland. He leaves a widow and four daughters, Mrs J. S. Clarke (Ashburton), Mrs G. A. Baxter (Mayfield), Mrs Edgar Bifl-dick (Mayfield), and Miss Madge Paterson (Mayfield).
MR GAINE CARRINGTON. • GISBORNE, April 26. Mr Gaine Carrihgton, the well-known studmaster, died suddenly this morning, ag2d 66. Mr Gaine Carrington was the owner of the horse Hunting Song, the leading sire of the last two seasons. He did not race or breed to a large extent, but among the mares he bred from in recent years were Tuna and Brightly (by Gazeley), Idaiioe (by "Kilbroney), Queen Elizabeth and Waikohu (by Finland), Prickles (by Panmure), Smoke Concert (by Land of Song), Soot (by All Black), Star of Gold (by Hunting Song), Tea Doll (by Tea Tray), Mark wood (by King" Mark), and Two Ways (by Cynic). The Caulfield Cup winner, Gaine Carrington, was named as a compliment to him.
SIR ALBERT GOODERHAM. TORONTO, April 25. Sir Albert E. Gooderham, the distiller, financier, and philanthropist, died at the age of 74 from streptococcus, developed from a septic throat contracted during the war. He pfaced at the disposal of the British Government the distilling plant of Gooderham and Worth, which was converted for the manufacture of acetone used as a solvent in the j>roduction 0 f cordite. The plant is now producing threequarters of the acetone made within the Empire.
