M. PIERRE LAVAL

CONTESTING A MAYORALTY.

THE FRANCO-SOVIET PACT.

NOT PROVOCATIVE OF WAR,

(United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) PARIS, April 26.

M. Pierre Laval (Minister of Foreign Affairs) is again contesting the mayoralty of Auberyilliers, a suburb of Paris. He at present holds the office.

M. Laval declared that he would refuse to sign the Franco-Soviet pact if, as French Communists averred, it involved mutual military assistance, as it would produce war. "lam in agreement with Moscow," said M. Laval, "and envisage a pact preventing, not provoking, war and forming part of Europe in collective security nOt directed against any country."
