ROYAL ACADEMY SENSATION. TWO CASES MADE PUBLIC. ASSOCIATE'S RESIGNATION. (United Press Association— LONDON, April 25. A sensation on the eye of the Royal Academy exhibition was created by the resignation from the associateship of Stanley Spencer, because the president (Sir William Llewellyn) and the council refused to hang two of his five pictures. The rejections are entitled "Lovers" and "St. Francis and his Birds." The former shows a group, including a. woman, carrying an elderly man. "St. Francis and his Birds" depicts an elderly man amid birds. His body is apparently deformed. The hanging committee does not think these pictures advantageous to Spencer's reputation or to the influence of the academy.

Mr ISpencer declares that the committee's action is outrageous, and he is exhibiting all five pictures himself.

Homerville Hague, who has painted the portraits of more Royal personages than any other living artist, is applymgtfor a summons against the committee to show cause why i* rejected his painting, "Band Playing at St. James's Palace." A friend says that the Academy has hot accepted a number of Hague s pictures since 1914. He thinks it is time to take drastic action.

NO SUMMONS ISSUED. APPEAL TO KING MENTIONED. (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 26. A Magistrate at Marlborough Street Court informed Homerville Hague that he had no power to issue a summons against the committee of the Royal Academy to show why the pictures were rejected. He suggested that Hague should lay an information. Mr Hague says he will lay an information. He is also going to ask his Majesty to withdraw the Academy s charter. He said he was determined to continue the fight, even to the Privy Council.
