The opening day's programme of the Greymouth Jockey Club's autumn meeting, postponed from Wednesday on account of rain, was held yesterday. Threatening weather prevailed, during the forenoon, but it cleared early in the afternoon. The track was holding, but not as heavy as had been anticipated. The attendance was satisfactory for an off day, and speculation was not very spirited. A sum of £3740 10s was handled, against £4053 on the corresponding day last year. YEARLING SALES AT SYDNEY. GOOD PRICES OBTAINED. i • SYDNEY, April 26. At the concluding day of the yearling sales, Mr D. Mackinnon (Melbourne) paid 600 gs for a shapely chestnut filly by Heroic, from Belle Gallante. Mr Percy Miller, of the Kia Ora Stud, Scone, offered nine colts and 10 fillies by Baralong (imported), also eight fillies by Pantheon (imported), the complete draft realising 3860g5. Peter Pan's half-brother, an attractive colt by Brazen from Adwina, was passed ;n at 800 gs. Mr H. Couzens, of Melbourne, purchased a beautiful bay colt by Spearhead from The Amazon for 350 gs. A large draft of Silvius fillies made from 50gs to 160 gs. The great improvement in racing in the past 12 months has been reflected in higher prices and more spirited bidding at this year's sales. Increased prize-money has brought back to the racing fold many sportsmen whose colours were prominent several years ago, Their presence at the sales was realised by breeders, and made for greater competition than has prevailed for some years.

NEW ZEALAND BUYERS. SYDNEY, April 26. At the yearling sales Mrs W. G. Graham, of New Zealand, bought an Excitement —Glittering colt for 350 guineas. A. H. Long (New Zealand) bought a Silvius—Changeuse gelding for 250 guineas. The New Zealander, Mr G. Barton, secured a Baralong colt from Whillhelmina for 180 gs. FAMOUS SIRES DEAD. LONDON, April 25. Two famous sires, Blandford and Foblaw, are dead. Blandford sired three Derby winners—Windsor Lad, Blenheim and Trigo. Blandford's stock won £75,707 in fiat racing in 1934, beating StockwelPs record by £1866. , Blandford cost Mrs R. Dawson only 730 guineas in 1920. He was a failure on the racecourse, yet sired three Derby winners. His offspring won 201 races, valued at £202,000.
