SUNLIGHT LEAGUE

ACTIVITIES IN ASHBURTON.

BRANCH'S WORK REVIEWED. In the report to be presented to the annual meeting of the Sunlight League of New Zealand in Christchurch on Friday, May 10, the following reference is made to activities in Ashburton: — "The membership of the Ashburton branch stands at 140. The branch has concentrated on the milk-in-schools scheme. Money for this object has been raised by public subscriptions and largely augmented by the proceeds of a children's dance recital. "At the Ashburton East School milk is being supplied to between 65 and 80 children, and though many pay for their supply, others are assisted by the branch, while a' number have free milk given by the branch. "At the Borough School a milk scheme is carried on by the School Committee. At the Allenton School a trial group of children has been supplied with milk by the Allenton residents. It is hoped in the near future that the milk scheme in this school will embrace much larger numbers. "During the winter months, seven meetings were held in order to listen to the monthly radio talks given by the Sunlight League. yAt these meetings further addresses were given by Ashburton medical practitioners, and Miss E. J. Watt (Matron of the Hospital). "The half-yearly meeting was held on September 20, the patron (Sir William Nosworthy) presiding. At this meeting Mr J; Connolly, M.P., was appointed a; patron, Mrs F. W. Watt president, and Mesdames G. I. Miller and W. P. Ryburn vice-presidents. Mr Allan Leslie, F.R.C.V.S. (Lincoln College) gave an address on ' Milk and its Food Value.'

"The branch suffered a severe loss by the sudden death of its esteemed president (Mrs J. Lane). "During the year the secretary (Miss M. Roberts) has given addresses on the ' Aims and Objects of the League ' at Mount Somers, Methven, Coldstream, Seafield, and at the annual meeting of the Baring Square Methodist New Church Guild.

"Hampers were forwarded from members of the branch to the League camps, held at Okain's Bay and Pigeon Bay."
