MANY CANDIDATES. MR WOODS NOT OPPOSED. 15 STANDING FOR THE COUNCIL. POWER BOARD MEMBERS OPPOSED. DR. WELLS FOR HOSPITAL BOARD Oi the four issues that were to come before Ashburton Borough electors at the elections to be iield. on May 8, two only will be coming forward, these being the election of eleven members of the Ashburton Borough. Council and three members on the Asnburton Electric Power Board. The present Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) Has been nominated without opposition and has befn declared elected for the new term, winch will be for three years. Dr. J. Russell Wells, Borough representative! on the. Ashburtoit Hospital Board, has been returned to that position unopposed. . Until this morning, the Returning Officer (Mr W.. Patterson) had not received any nominations of candidates for the Borough Council, but by closing time (noon) 15 had been received. Two members of the present Council, Mr W. H. Bundle, wno has been a member for eight years, and Mr A. L. Jones, who has been a member for two years, have not been nominated for a further term. The other members have again offered then- services to the burgesses. They are Messrs J. Thompson, F. J. E. Smallbone, E. Buchanan, J. T. Pratley, HI. R. C. McElrea, W. H. Robinson, E. H. Orr, R. Kerr, and Dr. J. Connor.

Six new candidates have been nominated. They are Messrs fe\ J. Graham, J. Shaw, H. D. Johnston, S. Mitchell, G. Holmes, and W. C. J. Osman. This makes fifteen candidates for the eleven teats.

The three sitting Borough members on the Ashburftn Electric Power Board, Messrs W. H. Woods, W. H. Rundle and E. F. Nieoll, are being opposed by Mr H. R. C. For the Mayoralty there are two candidates—Mr B. G. Sullivan (sitting Mayor) and Sir Hugh Acland (representing the Citizens' Association). ; For 16 seats on the City Council there are 44 candidates—a record. The nominees include full Citizens' and Labour tickets, several Independents, a Socialist and a Communist.- ■. For the Hospital Board (nine seats) there are 21 candidates, and for the Harbour Board (four seats) ten.
