FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From "Guardian," April 26, 1885.) Harvest Thanksgiving—There was a large attendance ac the annual harvest thanksgiving service Jield in St. Iritephen's church on Thursday evening. The church had been tasterully decorated with corn, fruit, flowers and evergreens and presented quite an effective appearance. The sermon was preached, by the Rev. E. A. Lingard, of St. Luke's, Christchurch, who chose as <nis text the seventh verse of the fourth chapter of Phillipians. The rev. gentleman delivered an eloquent and impressive sermon and his hearers listened with marked attention from beginning to end. A special anthem, by C'alcott, was taken from the 55th Psalm, ana was pleasingly rendered by the choir. The onertory amounted to over £3. Hospital Staff Praised.—-Dr. Grabham, the Inspector-General) of Hospitals and Lunatic Asylums, visited, the Asihburton Hospital on Saturday morning. He strongly condemned the construction of the.' building but he spoke in the highest terms of praise of the management of the hospital and complimented the steward and matron on the care /bestowed upon the inmates.
Twenty-mile Running Match—A 20mile run'shing match for £lO a-side, between J. Johns and G. Tillett, came off in the Town Hall on Saturday night. Johns was declared the winner', completing the distance in 2hrs lomin, his opponent in that time only covering 17 miles 28 laps.
TWENTY-FIVE YEAR® AGO. (From "Guardian," April 26, 1910.) Orchestral Conductor—The Ashburton Orchestral Society has completed arrangements for Mr Alfred Bunz, of Christchurch, to continue to conduct the orchestra. The society is to be congratulated on having again secured the services of Mr Bunz. Scouts' Church Parade—There were 25 Scouts' at the church parade, held in Baring Square Church on Sunday morning, Chief Scoutmaster S. G. Macfarlane and Scoutmaster George Porter being in command. The Rev. W. .Beckett, of Temuka. conducted the service. 1 The lads presented a smart appearance while their discipline and attentiveness left nothing to be desired.
Ashburton Farmers' Union—The annual meeting of the Ashburton branch, of the Farmers' Union was held •on Saturday afternoon, Mr F. Frunipton presiding: The balance-sheet, showed a credit at the bank of 4s 7d. The election of office-bearers resulted as follow: President, Mr F. Frampton; vice-president, Mr T. Manson • treasurer, Mr C. Reid; secretary, Mr J. B. Christian; auditor, Mr W. Pickles (all re-elected); committee, Messrs T. E. Upton, R, Gilmour, T. Capon, E. • Benbow, T. Capon, E. Benbbw, A. S. Hayman, S. S, Chapman, W. T. till, W. Moses, G. W. Leadley, J. Bruce, W. Harding, James Bland and John Williams; delegates to the provincial conference, Messrs Mawson, O. Reid and .Harding.
