WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
ASHBURTON ANNUAL MEETING. PRESENTATION OF AWARDS. The fourth annual meeting of the Ashburton District Women’s Institute was held in St. Stephen’s Hall yesterday afternoon; the president (Mrs F. Curtis) presiding over a large attendance. The annual report reviewed a successful year and the financial statement presented by the treasurer (Mrs D. Fitzgerald) showed a, healthy credit balance.
Mre Curtis reviewed the year’s activities and thanked the committee lor its loyal support throughout. On behalf of the Drama Circle, Mrs W. J. Minogue presented Mrs Curtis with , a small bouquet. One new member was welcomed, and a welcome was also extended to Mrs D. Hamber, who had been ill for a considerable time.
Mrs \Y. J. Marshall was appointed delegate to the formation meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Federation. The new programme was presented by the secretary (Mrs Minogue). The following officers were elected: President, Mrs D. Fitzgerald; secretary, Mrs W. J. Minogue; committee, Mesdames E. A. Amos, P. J. Andrew, D. Breeze, E. A. Gockroft, S. Graham, G. D. H. Hefford, E. Loftns, W. H. Woods, D. A. Morgan and Miss M. Hambley. It was decided to hold the birthday party on the afternoon of April 26, and to enter a choir in the South Canterbury Federation’s contest at Timaru.
Mrs Woods presented the following prizes:—Aggregate of points for the year: Miss M. Hambley 1, Mrs J. Bland 2. Handcraft Circle’s awards: Mrs S. Graham (punchwork tray cloth) 1, Mrs A. C. Shaw (organdi tea-cosy) 2. Lillian Chambers Memorial Trophy for best example of thrift: Mrs S. J. Andrew (quilted cushion). Mrs W. J. Minogue’s special for autumn flowers and foliage, Mrs A. C. Shaw. Mesdames Coward and Miller were thanked for judging the year’s work, and a vote of thanks was also accorded the newspapers. Invitations to the birthday parties of the Maronan and \Vakanui Institutes ( were received.
The hostesses were Mesdames Amos, Hefford, W. Barrett, Baker, E. Buchanan and Miss E. J. Matt.
