COMMUNIST ON TRIAL.
DEPORTATION QUESTION. (United Press Association— Copyright). NEW YORK, March 21. Evelyn Strachey, the English author, appeared before the Immigration Board at Chicago’, to-day for formal deporation and the hearing of the report, which will be forwarded to- the Department of Labour at Washington for final decision. Questioners read from Strachey’s writing’s and attempted to show that he believed in the violent overthrow of the Government. They also quoted from the writings of Karl Marx and Engels, requesting Strachey to comment on them. His defence was that, while he was a believer in Communism, he was not a member of the party. He never urged violence in any American lectures. Strachey will he allowed a more detailed defence at the hearing to-mor-row.
