ENTERTAINMENTS.

MAJESTIC THEATRE. All the characters typical of an American small town are found in "The Life of Vergie Winters," RKORadio's dramatic romance starring Ann Harding, which shows at the Majestic Theatre to-night and to-morrow night, with a matinee to-morrow afternoon. The doctor, the minister, the shoemaker and the girl in the hat shop are present. So too are the inquisitive and gossipy old maids, the village belles, the community politician, the pool hall loafers, the rich banker, and the social leaders, and the girls beyond the pale of polite convention. Against this background of friends, neighbours, enemies and acquaintances, the love story of Vergie Winters, the town milliner, and John Shadwell, son of the wealthiest citizen, unfolds and becomes a town scandal and later, a front page sensation. John Boles plays the leading male role and Helen Vinson is seen as the other member of the central love triangle.

SILVER BAND CONCERT. The Ashburton Silver Band, under the conductor (Mr S. G. Teale), gave a municipal concert from the rotunda in the Ashburton Domain last evening when there was a good attendance of the public. The programme which was much appreciated' was as follows: — March, "Tonalic;" intermezza, "The Village Force.;" hymns, "Old Earth," and "Darwell No. 148;" waltz, "Evening Chimes;" fox trots, "Roll Out of Bed" and "Rustic Revelry;" march, "Awwhnee." i "THE GAIETIES OF 1934."

A rare treat is in store for Ashburton lovers of flesh and blood shows, as arrangements have been made for Stanley McKay's Australian "Gaieties" Company to play in His Majesty's Theatre next Tuesday, the sparkling revue being "Hello, Ashburton." The fun of the'revue is entrusted to Frank Perrin, English comedian, the Delavale Jewish impersonator, and Dorothy Arnold, Australian comedy girl. One long night of laughter is assured from these talented artists. The delightful song scenes are interpreted by Victor Burke, Irish tenor, Nell Fleming, American comedienne, and Cecil Perry, English baritone, assisted by the pretty and talented Sun Kissed Ballet and Esma Roach, solo violiniste. Although strong in singing and comedy it is with the specialities that the "Gaieties" are the most popular. Of these perhaps the most outstanding and spectacular is that ofi the Flying Arabs a t-roup of five girls and three men whose work is a revelation.
