GRAIN AND PRODUCE. CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. (Special to the "Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. There has been little change in the Christchurch grain and produce market since the end of last week. The potato market is slightly easier, but no change has taken place in quotations, wnicn remain at £4 to £4 5s for forward delivery. Farmers are holding on to their supplies in anticipation of better prices later in the season, but so far, there does not seem to be any prospect of an improvement. There is little demand for onions, and supplies are scarce, lae price quoted is £7, an exceptionally high figure. More oats are now offering, growers having been induced to part with their lines on account of the present high prices. Algerians have eased slightly, however, because the South Island prices are getting above the Australian level and North Island purchasers are dealing with the Commonwealth. Partridge peas, too. are quieter, quotations being above export parity, and overseas buyers are not prepared to follow New Zealand figures. Cocksfoots, ryegrasses, clovers and wheat show no change, but for the seed lines there is a steadjyi demand for autumn sowing. This demand would be greatly accentuated in the event of a good rain over the Dominion. Autumn sowing has been retarded because of the lack of moisture in the soil. Following are nominal prices quoted to bo paid to farmers on trucks at country stations, sacks extra unless otherwise mentioned: — Milling wheat (new season's)—March delivery, Tuscan 4s, Hunters 4s 2d, Pearl and Velvet 4s 4d, f.o.b. Fowl Wheat—3s 9d to 3s lOd a bushel. „, ~ Oats—Gartons, 2s to 2s sd; Algerians 2s to 2s 4d; Duns, Is lOd to 2s 6d, according to quality. Chaff—£3 to £3 ss. AUCKLAND MARKETS. AUCKLAND, March 12. The most notable happening of the week in the grain and produce markets has been a sharp decline in the price of Australian pollard 1 , which can now be landed to sell in Auckland at from £6 10s to £6 15s per ton. Some business has been reported as low as £6 ss, ex the ship. The demand at present is not nearly as keen as it was, although the lower prices will tend to stimulate trade. Stocks held by local mills are light, and their prices are unchanged. Meantime the market for fowl wheat is very firm, but there has been no further advance in price. It is believed here that those chiefly concerned in the southern wheat trade are not anxious that the present comparative shortage should be utilised to send prices up 1o an extreme level, lest it inspire an agitation against the existing duties. The present local wholesale rate is 5s 9d per bushel. A lew lines of under-grade good serviceable samples have come t° hand and are selling at 3d a bushel cheaper. The demand for maize is only moderate, and it would appear that the recent advance in price has checked consumption. Australian barley is still dear and the price across the Tasman has gone up another penny. The potato market is virtually unchanged. The best still come from the Ohakune district, and the Manawatu consignments continue unreliable. Small lots have come up from the south on consignment, but the quality is poor, as it is too early yet for satisfactory shipments. The market is still plentifully supplied with Canterbury onions, which are selling locally at lis per cwt. Wholesale current prices:— Pollard and Bran—Mill prices: Polard £7 10s, bran £5 15s per ton; merchants' prices, pollard, local £7 5s per ton, Australian £6 10s to £G 15s; bran £G.
