HELP NEEDED
RETURNED SOLDIER PROBLEM. IMPERIAL EX-SERVICEMEN'S CASE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 12. During his tour of New Zealand General Godley has taken a keen, sympathetic interest in the problems of exservicemen, and the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association has arranged to furnish him with information relative to ex-Imperial soldiers resident in this country, with a view to prosecuting the claims of the dominions for assistance from the war relief funds available in Great Britain. "It is burden we cannot very well carry," stated Mr S. Harrison, general secretary of the N.Z.R.S.A. "Thej take the stand at Home that when a. man goes overseas he automatically becomes a citizen of the country in which he settles, and that that country should be responsible for his welfare." Mr Harrison said that there were 20,000 ex-Imperial men in New Zealand who were eligible for assistance from local funds. Since 1927 various funds had expended at least £230,000 on exservicemen generally. The Canteen Fund, which had been built up to £250,000, was down to £IBB,OOO at the beginning of last year.
