MAJESTIC TREATRE. Rich with the glittering decadence of France in the days of Louis XV., "Madame* Du Barry," the film which opened at the Majestic Theatre last night, commences with Madame's installation as the King's mistress and concerns itself with her conquests, follies and political successes until the death of the King. Then, defiant in the face of the displeasure of Marie Antoinette, the new queen, she is led to prison. The piquancy of picture is heightened by glimpses of the indiscretions which made Du Barry's name a part of history. Thus in the film she is seen sleigh riding*at the height of summer, the snow for her sleigh being "every grain of sugar in Paris." When jealous rivals steal the dress which* she is to be presented at court she appears in her nightgown and when the Prime Minister thwarts her she compromises him in the eyes or the King. SALE OF HARVEST PRODUCE. Fruit and produce given in connection with the harvest festival of the Baring Square Methodist Church on Sunday was disposed of at an auction held in the school hall last evening. There was a good attendance, presided over by the Rev. G. B. Hinton. At the commencement a short musical programme was contributed as follows: — Anthems, the tdioir; vocal solos, Misses N. Bishop and~AV. Slater and Mr G. Warriner"; cornet solo, Mr L. Baughen; cornet duet, Messrs L. Baughen and H. W. Hay ward. Mr A. H. Fenn sold the gifts of produce and bidding was keen, with the result that a satisfactory sum was raised for trust funds. Thanks was expressed to Mr Fenn for his gratuitous services, to the performers and the donors of gifts.
