ANNUAL CAMP.

SURREY HILLS IN APRIL. THE YEOMANRY CAVALRY. "B" SQUADRON AS ADVANCE PARTY.

The annual regimental camp of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry will be held at Cavendish, near Mount Somers, on a portion of the Surrey Hills Estate, commencing on Saturday, March 30, and finishing on Monday, April 8. As is the custom, the squadron in whose area the camp is being held, will proceed to camp about four days earlier than the rest of the unit in order to erect the camp. This year, as the camp is being held in the Ashburton County, "B" Squadron (Ashburton Mounted Rifles) will form the advance party and will proceed to Mount Somers on Tuesday, March 20. The camp will be commanded by Major L. R. C. McFarlane, M.C., with Major H. G. Livingstone as second in command, and Captain K. J. Walker as adjutant. The camp quartermaster will be Captain E. Webb, and the padres Canon A. H. Norris and the Rev. R. S. Watson, M.O. There will be four squadrons in camp, as follows:—"A" Squadron, North Canterbury and Banks Peninsula, Captain A. Macintosh; "B" Squadron, Ashburton, Major A. J. N'ieoll; "C" Squadron, South Canterbury, Major G. Mathias; Headquarters Squadron, Captain G. W. Logan. Intensive Training. Intensive mounted training will be carried out and the whole of the Surrey Hills Estate will be used as a tactical area. During the week the camp will be inspected by the G.O.C. New Zealand Military Forces (Major-Gen-eral Sir William Sinclair-Burgess) and his staff. On Sunday, April 7, the camp will he open to the public and a review and mounted display will bo held, followed by the annual regimental sports. Inter-squadron competition at the sports is particularly keen, as points are awarded toward the coveted Gallipoli Cup, which has been won every year it has been competed for by the Ashburton Squadron. On Saturday, March 30, three or four teams from "B" Squadron will travel across to Methven to compete in the Lloyd Lindsay competition at the Methven Show.

The social side will be well catered for. There will be a canteen and a Y.M.C.A. tent in camp, while several dances have been arranged in the Mount Somers Memorial Hall during the week, commencing Avith the Mount Somers Plunket ball on Monday, April 2, and ending with a regimental dance on Saturday, April 6.

There will be about 350 men in camp altogether and over 300 horses. The main body of the regiment ("A," "C," and H.Q." Squadrons) will proceed to camp by special trains on Saturday, March 30. Major Nicoli expects to have between 80 and 90 men from "B" Squadron in camp. This will be the biggest total in camp at one time in the whole history of the squadron.
