COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondent*.) CHERTSEY Mrs A. P. Bruce presided over a good attendance at the Chertsey Women’s Institute meeting held at Pendarves. The president on behalf of members, presented Mrs J. L. Bush with a small gift, Mrs Bush having taken up residence in Timaru. An interesting address on the care of children’s teeth was given by Mr A. L. Jiones (Ashburton) who received a hearty vote of thanks, moved by Miss N. Robinson. A demonstration of quilting was given by Mrs J. H. Wilson. A competition for buttonholes resulted as follows: Mrs J. B. Lambie 1, Mrs W. Copland! 2, Mrs E. Banks 3, Mrs C. H. Hampton 4. This was judged by Mrs H. J. Wilson and Mrs G. Chambers. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Lambie, E. Bauks, W. E. Rankin, and Misses D. Campbell and E. Flynn. RAKAIA The annual harvest thanksgiving service was held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Sunday. The church was decorated with harvest produce and fruit which will be given to the Presbyterian Orphanage in Christchurch, The minister, the Rev. D. B. Ashford, gave an address on harvest thanksgiving in other countries. Special anthems were given by the choir. Solos were sung by Miss M. Ashford and 1 Mrs Bryant. Mrs A. Oakley was accompanist. Mr C. Liddington played the organ. The first company of the R-akaia girl guides were present. LAURISTON. The annual picnic of the Lauriston School was held at Sumner in fine weather, about 90 children, parents, and friends were present and a most enjoyable day was spent. LYNDHURST. Harvest thanksgiving services for the Lyndhurst portion of the Methven Parochial district was held in the hall on Sunday when a crowded congregation was present. The Rev. E. A. Osmers (vicar of Methven) was the preacher and Miss Mary Battson organist. A large quantity of gifts was forwarded to be sent to St. Saviour’s orphanage.
