EPSTEIN’S CHRIST.

, question in the commons. MINISTER NOT ACTING. (United' Press Association— Copyright.) * (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, March 11. In the House of Commons, Mr Cooper Rawson, referring to Epstein s recent sculpture, asked whether, m view of the resentment created among the people of different denominations, due to the statue which offended public decency, the Home Secretary (Sir John Gilmour) under powers to prevent blasphemous and obscene exhibitions, would instruct the police to remove or confiscate the statue or take steps to guard against a breach of peace which might lie provoked. Sir John Gilmour said: “I have no information leading me to support that any action is necessary.”

The sculptor Jacob Epstein’s annual sensation is on exhibition at the Leicester Galleries. It is an eleven-foot marble weighing seven tons representing Christ crowned with thorns. Ihe nought simplicity of the carving recalls Easter Island figures. There is just enough detail to suggest tortured features and roped hands.
