LOOKING BACK.
/ FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “Guardian,” March 1,2, 1885.) A Vexed Question. —The deliberations oi the Ashburton School Committee on Tuesday evening on the much vexed question of the headmaster and the inspector were conducted in private and we are therefore unable to present our readers with a report of the proceedings w’hich we understand were of an exceedingly lively character. The discussion lasted over two hours and on resuming it was .reported that the committee had determined to coincide with a .resolution passed by the Board to the effect that the headmaster’s engagement should be terminated by three months’ notice. We learn that the decision was by no means unanimous. Western Fire Brigade.—A general meeting of the Western Fire Brigade whs heldi flt t/liG station Ihsl> evening j Superintendent A. Fooks in the chair. About 14 members were present. The business was to consider the advisableness of appointing trustees and it having been .resolved to appoint gentlemen to act as trustees, Messrs A. Fooks and J. Miles were elected. Messrs G. Reid and E. J. Paul were appointed a sub-committee to assist in the preparation of a deed of trust. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” March 12, 1910.) The Courthouse.—When new business was introduced at the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening the Mayor (Mr H. Davis) said there had been a feeling among a large number of the people of Ashburton for years past that the Courthouse should be removed to another site - ; say, to the reserve next to the Pos. Office. The present Courthouse building, which had no doubt served its purpose in the past, was certainly not an ornament to the town, neither were the grounds surrounding it, although for building sites the reserve was one of the most valuable in the town. It was unanimously resolved to make representations to Mr V. G. Day, S.M., by letter urging him to prevail upon the Minister of Justice (Dr. Findlay) to have adequate improvements made to the Courthouse and grounds and if possible to have the building removed to another site. Rangitata School.—At a meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education on Tuesday an application was received from the Rangitata Island School Committee asking for a residence and for new forms. The Board decided that they could not build a residence, as the school roll number was only ten, and the granting of new forms was held over till the inspector’s visit. ,
