WIVES OF WORKLESS. DEMAND IN CHRISTCHURCH. SEVERAL SCUFFLES AT DEPOT. salvation army aid promised THE MOST URGENT CASES. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Shouting “We want bread!” forty women, wives of unemployed, besieged the central relief depot this morning, demanding additional food. When they were told that no supplies were available an angry demonstration resulted and the place was in a turmoil until the police were summoned and a sergeant arrived. Later a deputation of women waited on the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee, who also stated that it could do nothing in the matter.
; Later, meeting the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) in his room at the Council Chambers the women were promised that a dozen of the most urgent cases would he helped by the Salvation Army to-morrow morning.
