COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondent). METHVEN. A most enjoyable little dance was held in the Town Hall yesterday in aid of the funds of the Public Library. There was a good attendance and the library will receive much-needed financial assistance. Music was supplied by Cook's orchestra, extras being played by Mrs A. S. Kennedy and Messrs J. Cretney and K. Cook. The duties of master of ceremonies were capably carried out by Mr W. 11. Owers. Mr A. G. Foreman (chairman of the committee) thanked those present for their attendance, and all who had assisted to make the function so successful.

RAKAIA. ' The monthly meeting of the Rakaia Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, was held in St. Andrew's Church on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Ashford, who presided over a large attendance, conducted the devotional exercises. A letter was received from Mrs Mawson, giving an account of the work in the Chinese mission in Auckland. Mrs R. S. Watson, of Ashburton, gave an addresa on "The Work of Modern Missionaries." Later a meeting of the Ladies' Guild was held, when further arrangements were made for the Fair of All Nations. A picture donated by the Misses Hinds to the fair was accepted with thanks. A bring-and-huy stall realised a. good sum, and made-up garments were handed in. It was decided that the next meeting be held at Mrs C. Shannon's. The hostesses were Mrs Nicol, Miss Boyd and Miss Oakley. The second of the weekly euchre tournaments run by the Kereone Hockey Club was held in the Oddfellows' Lodge Hall on Wednesday evening. Mrs T. Clark was the winner of the women's prize, and Mr 11. ©ouglas won the men's.

MAYFIELD. The monthly meeting of the Mayneld, branch, of tlie Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's rooms yesterday afternoon. Mrs J. Murdoch presided over a large attendance. The secretary read a JMew Year message from the Dominion'President. It was decided to have a stand at the Mayneld Show to sell basketware from the Blind Institute. Mrs. Johnston (president of the District Executive) wrote expressing willingness to attend the annual meeting. Mesdames Kingan, Howden and Barker were appointed delegates to the inter-pro-vincial executive meeting at Ashburton. A demonstration on preserved foods was much appreciated. Miss Z. Robertson explained how to make stocking protectors from felt hats. A competition for the best six vegetables resulted as follows-.—Miss Z. Robertson 1, Mrs J. Kingan 2, Mrs J. D. Murdoch 3. Afternoon tea was dispensed to members of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, who were holding a working bee in the showgrounds in preparation for the show on Saturday, March 16.

GREENSTREET. A meeting of the Greenstreet branch of the Women's Division of the" Farmers' Union was held in the schoolroom last Saturday afternoon. The president (Mrs S. Lilley) presided over a good attendance. An invitation was received from the Winchmore branch to attend its meeting next Thursday. Mrs H. Hunt gave an interesting report of the executive meeting. It was decided to send a letter of cheer to Mrs T. Banks in her illness. All members were urged to attend the meeting in connection with the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union in Ashburton. On behalf of members, Mrs S. Lilley presented Miss Lill (who is shortly to lie married) with two pyrex dishes and a casserole, aiid wished her every happiness in the future.
