LITTLE CIVIC PRIDE.
RESIDENTS OF ASHBIHRTON. OBJECTION TO STATEMENT. "There is very little civic pride among the people of Ashburton" was a statement made by a member, which produced considerable opposition at the Advance Ashburton Association s meeting last evening. Mr F. K. Cooper congratulated the Ashburton Borough Council on its endeavours to improve the appearance of the town, but said he had heard that bare patches on the East Street reserves were to be merely re-sown with grass. He considered this ridiculous, because pedestrians would continue to walk across the coiners of the lawns at the street intersections. He then said that the citizens had very little pride in their town when they were so carelessi as to spoil the appearance of these lawns. The chairman (Mr S. Mitchell): We can't let that go. Other members voiced their protest against this statement. • Mr Cooper went on to say that he made the assertion with regard to the reserves, and qualified his statement byadding "as regards the reserves." No further objection was made. A motion that paths be laid down diagonally across the corners of the lawns by Mr Cooper lapsed for want of a seconder.
