THE WHEAT BOARD

NEW REGULATIONS EXPECTED. ANXIETY OF GROWERS. (Special to the " Guardian.'') CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The wheat-farmers of Canterbury are waiting with a good deal of interest for an announcement from the Government on the future of the wheat marketing regulations which have now been in force for two years. The regulations are concerned with the crop of only one year at a time, and fresh regulations will need to be gazetted.' Officials of United Wheat-Growers, Ltd., the organisation of the South Island growers, have so far had no in dication at all of the intention of the Government, but they expect _ that within a week or two there will be some announcement. The regulations were brought into being to deal among other things with the big surplus that was anticipated two years ago. There was again a surplus in the second year, but there is every indication that the yield this year will not bp heavy enough to make a surplus of any importance. Many authorities believe that the carry-over from last year will be absorbed this year, and that there may actually be a shortage. For this reason, and also in view of the recommendations of the . Tariir Commission, wheat growers are wait- 1 ing with anxiety for some sign of what is to happen. It is conceivable that the Government, although it rejectee! the Commission's recommendations on wheat protection, may be influenced to the extent of reducing 'the reooru available to the grower. Until the new regulations are gazetted, it is anticipated that there will be no developments in the situation that exists between the growers of the" North Island and the growers of the south. It is not unlikely thai when -the new regulations are brought out there will be special clauses tc deal with the difference that at pre sent exists between the growers oi the two islands. In the meantime, the North Island growers have not replied to the invitation of the South Island growers to join their organisation.
