The County Council.—The following letter from ratepayers of the Chertsey district has been received by the Ashburton County Council:—"We, the undersigned ratepayers in the Chertsey district, regret to see the agitation got up against the; County Council, considering the inestimable benefits which have been conferred by the Council on this district and County generally, and we protest against any action being taken which may be the means of curtailing the powers of the Council or preventing the extensive and efficient maintenance of the system of water supply in its entirety. Situated as we are, near the boundaries of there road districts, we are all the more alive to the great disadvantage we should labour under if entirely dependent on small local bodies. And we are of opinion that the more extended and comprehensive the management of works in the County the better it will be for the whole bodvi-of ratepayers in it.
