RESULTS OF CYCLING EVENTS.
GROSE WINS SEVERAL HEATS (United Press Association—Copyright). LONDON, August 11. At. the Empire Games the bowling championships was won by England; the majority of the boxing titles went to England, Australia land South Africa taking one each; and in the cycling England won two events, Australia one and/ Canada. The New Zealand cyclist, Grose, won several heats but was unsuccessful in the finals. The results of the cycling events were:— 1000 Metres Time Trial—-EL Gray (Australia), 76 2-ssec, 1; L. McLeod (Canada), 78see, 2; E. Clayton (South Africa), 78 3-ssee, 3. Grose (New Zealand), llOsec, won; his heat. Manchester 1000 Metres Time Trial —A. Harvell (England), 81 3-ssec, 1; Grose (New Zealand), 80 2~ssec, 2; E. Clayton (South Africa), 58 3-ssec, 3; Gray (Australia) 56 3-ssec, 4. 1000 Yards Empire Championship— Grose beat D. McKenzie (Rhodesia) in the concluding heat in 108 3-s'sec. First semi-final: H. Pethybridge (Australia) 1, Grose 2. Time, 128 sec. Second semi-final: Higgins 1, Clayton 2. Time, 319 sec. The men sprinted only after the last 220 yards. Final:’®. Higgins (England) 1, Pethybridge 2. Time, 118 2-ssec. Won by a length. Clayton, whose time was 161 sec, was third, and Grose was fourth. 10 Miles Empire Championship—R. McLeod (Canada) 1, Clayton (South Africa) 2, Harvell (England) 3, Grose 4. Time, 24min 26 l-ssec. Nine countries competed. The Australians, Gray and Pethybridge, had tyre troubles. McKenzie (Rhodesia) met with an accident. In a desperate finish among a bunched field McLeod overhauled Clayton and worn by inches. Clayton had the busiest afternoon. He won the 1000 yards invitation scratch race in 94sec, in which the majority of the overseas competitors did not compete, reserving themselves for the 10 miles.
