THE RUGBY CODE. TWO WINS FOR ASHBURTON. In the first junior and third grade representative fixtures of the season, the Ashburton Rugby Union’s teams were successful against South Canterbury and Ellesmere respectively at the Showgrounds on Saturday. The Ashburton junior team defeated South Canterbury by 9 points to six in a match which was not very spectacular. The visiting forwards were heavy and fast, and the rear division combined well. Ashburton players, who were on the field together for the first time, gave a good showing, however, and much of the back play was neatly carried out. In a bright open match the third grade representatives team defeated the Ellesmere Sub-Union’s team by 12 points to 9. Ashburton’s forwards had an advantage in weight, andi the backs were also slightly superior. The senior competition match at the Showgrounds, where there was a good attendance of the public, including visitors from north and south, resulted in a win for Rakaia by 18 points to 6 over Technical Old Bbys. As Old Boys had a bye in the senior competition, on Saturday, it had arranged to combine with tlie Allenton Club, which defaulted to Methven, to play a combined friendly match against Methven, at Methyen. Ashburton were unlucky not to ground over the line several times, but their efforts were soon rewarded with a try following a lino-out within South Canterbury’s 25. When play returned to South Canterbury’s end of the field, all the Ashburton rear men handled with precision. Becldey got going, and handed to Todd, who passed out for Ironside to score the second try. Becldey’s kick narrowly missed. The half-time score was:— Ashburton ... 6 South Canterbury 0 South Canterbury forced the pace upon resumption, and had Ashburton bustled for a time. Things looked dangerous with Jordan in possession, and a clear field ahead, hut before he could make use of his opportunity South Canterbury had rallied round and smothered. The visitors went near to scoring when McNeill received from a passing- movement among his fellow backs. He kicked over the head of one of the defenders, and in the 'race for the hall Ashburton won, to force and relievo the situation. South Canterbury had a penalty awarded in a good position, hut the pick fell just below the bar. The visitors were knocking, but Ashburton held out, and soon, took a turn at- attack. From a

ruck on South Canterbury’s 25 Beckley made the opening for Ironside to race up the line and score a nice try. Becldey failed with the kick.
