SOME WOUNDS IN SHANGHAI.
PULLERS OF RICKSHAWS
OWNERS EMPLOY GANGSTERS.
DISPUTE WITH THE COUNCIL,
(United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.15 a.m.) SHANGHAI, August 10.
At ths International Settlement lOjGOO public-hire rickshaws almost entirely disappeared, from the streets to-day, to the accompaniment of riots and acts of sabotage. This is a climax to the prolonged dispute by the Municipal Council with the rickshaw owners whereby the latter were ordered to improve the conditions of pullers of the vehicles. Gangsters are engaged by the owners and middles-men, who stand to lose most*, and desperately endeavouring to maintain the service under the former conditions. It is estimated that between 50,000 and 70,000 pullers and their dependents are involved. Hundreds have been arrested. Volunteer pullers arc nursing wounds received in the riots.
