METHVEN Mr E. N. Johnson (Inspector for the Ashburton County Council) and assistants were in Methven yesterday, -when motor-cars were stopped on the main road for examination # of brakes under the regulations. A number of inefficient ibrakes were revealed and ordered to garages for repairs. Yellow discs were placed on all cars passing the prescribed tests.' There was a large gathering at the Anglican Sunday Schoolroom when the ex-pupils of the Methven District High School held another of . their social evenings. Music for the dancing Avas supplied by Cook's Orchestra, and Mr C. Petrie was M.O. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss B. Chambers and Mr M. Scoon, and a Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Helen Petrie and Mr S. Burrows. A meeting of benedicts and spinsters was held in the Anglican Hall, Mrs E. A. Wilson presiding_ over a large attendance. It was decided to hold a ball in the Town Hall on September 13. Miss Beryl Reid was appointed; honorary secretary,, and the following committee was elected: —Mesdames E. A. Wilson, H. E. Farr, A.. Lawrence, A. Harvey, O. Wilson, N. Dewe, Misses M. Grieve, A. Leggatt, G. Nordquist, N. Chapman, A. Sullivan, M, Mclbbctsan, P. McNamara and W. R. Owers. HINDS. The Hinds Ladies' Hockey Club held a very enjoyable and successful shipwreck ball in the hall last evening. Visitors were present from Ashburton and the surrounding districts. The hall was tastefully decorated in coloured streamers. Music was supplied by Morris's Band., and extras were played by Mr Weir and Mr B. Claughton. Many novel and amusing costumes were worn. The prize for the best ladies' costume was won by Miss N. and that for the men by Mr D. McInnes. A waltzing competition was won by Mrs G. Hampton and Mr J. Mulhern (Ashburton), Mrs McElhinney and Mr M. McLauchlan being second, and Mr and Mrs R. Good third. The Monte Carlo one-step was won by Miss A. Musson and Mr D. Simpson. Mr W. Edwards (May field) was the judge, and Mr B. Claughton was M.C.
