METHVEN. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Methven Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held! on Wednesday evening, the N.G. (Bro. T. Lilley) presiding over a large attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed to Bro. lleesby in the recent death of his father. Siciv pay amounting to £5 was passed in favour of two members. Bro. A. L. Mangin reported on the quarterly meeting of the United Friendly Societies’ Council at Ashburton, at which he represented the lodge. The election of officers resulted: N.G., Bro. S. Chambers; V.G., Bro. Roy Drummond; Elective Secretary, Bro. K. Cook; W T arden, Bro. R). Lilley; Guardian, Bro. J. Dolan; R.S. toN.G., Bro. K. Fryer.; R.S. to V.G., Bro. A. Drummond j L.S. to N.G., Bro. W. Currie; L. to V;G., Bro. W. Pike. It was decided to hold the annual ball in the Town Hall on June 29. The following are the meteorological observations for May recorded by Mr James Carr, “Rudstone,” Methven: — Rain fell on 16 days, the maximum fall being 207 points on the 3rd. The total for the month was 4.47 inches, compared with 2.29 inches in May last year. The average rainfall for May during the last 26 years is 3.01 inches. The dryest May during that period was in 1919, when only 45 points were recorded, and the wettest was in 1923, when 10.19 inches fell. The total fall for this year to date is 20.75 inches, and for the same period of last year 12.71 inches. The highest value of the barometer was 30.48 on the 26th,* and the lowest 29.40 _oU the 15th. The highest reading of the maximum thermometer was 63 on the.2nd, and the lowest minimum 31 on the 26th and 31st. The lowest reading on.the grass was 20 on the 31st. Frosts were recorded on 14 nights. There was one gale and one hailstorm. The range of temperature was 16.4, and temperature for the month was 43.6. 1 LYNDHURST.

A “back to school days” dance, organised by the Anglican Ladies’ Guild, in aid" of funds to clothe a little girl at Stj Saviour’s Orphanage, was held in the Lyndhurst Hall recently. There was a good attendance, visitors being present from Ashburton and the surrounding districts. Mrs W. Cook thanked all for their support, and presented the prizes to the winners of the competition for the best costumes to Miss Lois Smith and to Mr C. G. Prebble. Music for the dancing was played by Cook’s orchestra, with extras by Mr Jack CretnSy and Mr Ken. Cock. Mr A. O. Gadd was master of, ceremonies. HINDS. The Rey: A. J. Seamer’s Maori Male Choir gave a most entertaining concert in the Hinds Hall on Wednesday evening. The items consisted of Psalms, comedies, part songs, monologues, voice orchestra; ancient taiahas, humour and pathos, harmonies, waiatas, dances, hakas, por music and songs. The proceeds were in aid of the Methodist Home and Maori Mission Fund. The Hinds Ladies’ Hockey Club held a very enjoyable dance in tile hall last evening. Music was supplied by Morris’s Band, and extras .were played by.Mr B. Claugliton and Miss I. Morris. Miss J. Mcßae (president of the club) made presentations to Mrs R. ReitE and Miss N. former members of the club. The Monte Carlo one-step was won by Miss E. Lister and partner. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Mclnnes and Mr S. Lone. Mr A. Elms was M.C.
