New Zealand Footballers.—The New Zealand rootballers played their second match on Saturday afternoon on the Association Ground, Sydney, against a strong team representing New South Wales. The weather was splendid and the ground hard and in excellent condition. The attendance was large, fully three thousand persons being present. The New Zealanders played splendidly and were victorious by two goals and one try) to nil.. The first goal was obtained by War-brick, by an excellent kick from the field. The second -was scored by W. Milton from a touchdown obtained by Taiaroa, who throughout the afternoon showed magnificent form. A try was also secured by Robertson.

The Australians'- at Home.—The match between the Gentlemen of England and the Australians was concluded on Saturday. The visitors made 135 in the first and 269 in the second innings. The match ended in a victory for the Englishmen by. four wickets. Vital Statistics.—The vital statistics registered at Ashburton for the month of May are as follow:—Births 33, deaths 5, marriages 8.

Lawn Tennis Players.—With a view to supplying an object lesson to all Ashburton people who are interested iii lawn tennis, the Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club has arranged for four of the leading Christchurch players (including Mr Anthony Wilding, now holder of many championships in the Old World and in Australia) toi visit Ashburton on Thursday to play a, series of matches on the Baling Square’Club’s asphalt courts in Cameron Street. Every care will be taken to comfortably seat onlookers and tea and refreshments will be obtainable on the grounds. A great deal should he learnVLy watching such masters of a game that is becoming more and more scientific. Young players especially should profit by the opportunity and learn enough to enable them to play with right strokes. Sale of a Horse.—A horse offered by auction by Mr H. Stephenson on Saturday was knocked down to a bidder for the ruinpus sum of 4s 6d. It is said the horse had a- new pair of shoes on when sold, so that the price does not, really convey a correct idea of the value of horseflesh. <
