COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN. The committee of the Methven Ladies' Hockey Club met on Tuesday evening, Mrs G. Johns presiding. The secretary reported that two senior and one junor teams had been entered for the Ashburton County seven-a-side tournament to be held at Ashburton on June 4. Ways of assisting the club's funds were discussed, and it was agreed to organise a number of socials. The Methven Public Library Committee met on Tuesday evening. Mr A. G. Foreman presided. The chairman advised that 23 new volumes had been bought since last meeting, and were, in circulation. During.a discussion about raising further finances for the library, it was reported that community singing and a concert could be held, and Messrs Renai and Stone were appointed to confer with Mr A. W. Brown, of Christchurch, who would act as leader, to arrange a suitable date in June. Further concerts could be held later in the year.

BARRHILL. The monthly meeting of the Barrhill Women's Institute was s held in the school. Mrs Holmes presided. An invitation was received for two members to attend the third birthday of the Rakaia Women's Institute. A competition for the best sultana cake was won by Mrs Maw, with Mrs Holmes second and Miss Hayward third.. During the social half-hour a competition was -won by Miss Hayward. Miss Fairey was hostess.

D ROM ORE. The adjourned meeting of householders to elect a school committee was held in the Dromore School on Monday evening. As only three householders were present no committee was elected. EIFFELTON. ' Fifty members and friends were present at the first meeting of the newly formed Social and, Educational Club held in the school last week. The entertainment took the form of a mock election, for which the following candidates offered themselves: Messrs R. Latimes (Independent), J. Cocks (Country Party)., H. Hawkins (Labour) and J. Moffatt (Coalition). The speeches of the various candidates were followed by a very attentive audience, and considerable amusement was caused at question time. The poll resulted in the return of Mr J. Cocks by a narrow margin. The chairman was Mr S. P. Taylor. On Saturday a visit of inspection was paid 1 to the scttool by Messrs W. P. Soeneer (chairman), S. Smith, G. W. Armitage (members) of the Canterburv Education Board, and Mr H. ('foreman). They were conducted' over the grounds and buildings by Mr H C. Patterson (chairman of the School Committee), .and expressed satisfaction at the improvements carried out. ' ~. ,'. The young people of the district are very busy preparing for the Tennis Club's annual ball, and it is rumoured that the function will be one that will outshine any of the previous very successful entertainments held in the district A large number of residents ot Ashburton and surrounding districts have signified their intention oi being present. ~ ' , . .. The attendance at the school is_ quite satisfactory. The measles epidemic has so far had little effect in the distinct, and none of the cases reported has been contracted at the school. MOUNTSOMERS. Messrs W- P. Spencer (chairman), G. Armitage and S. Smith, members or the Canterbury Education Board, visited the Mount Somers School on Tuesday, when representations were made for improved facilities in the senior classroom. HINDS The monthly meeting of the Hinds School Committee was held on Monday evening. It was reported that the school re-opened that day with a lair attendance, having been closed during the previous week owing to measles. Three new pupils were enrolled. Confirmation of Miss B. B. Taylor s appointment as assistant mistress was received. The Ashburton Dental Clinic advised that as its work was lour months in arrears it would not be possible to treat any children from this school for some months; It was decided to protest strongly against the clinic's unreasonable attitude, pointing out that should this course be strictly observed the children would have only about three montns of the year available for treatment. It was reported that the chairman and members ot the Canterbury Education Board paid a visit of inspection to the school last Saturday. The committee had obtained approval in regard to the shitting of the coal and wood shed. Mrs Grayburn was appointed: caretaker, commencing from July 1. At the monthly meeting of the Hinds Women's Institute the president (Mrs J. McQuilkin) presided over a large attendance. One new member was elected. The motto for the month was read: "Trifles make perfection and perfection is no trifle." it was decided to send a delegate to the annual conference to be held at Wellington. It was decided to hold the birthday party on the evening of Friday, June 29. Mrs Curtis (president of the Ashburton District Women's Institute) gave an interesting talk on the foundation ot the Institute movement, tracing the rapid world-wide growth and splendid. nroeress that had taken place since its fntmduction to England in 1915 The speaker was accorded a hearty vote ot thanks Instructive and,most enjoyable demonstrations were given by three members of the Ashburton Institute. Mrs Boothroyd showed ' how baskets could be made from pine needles; Mrs Pitts exhibited egg-shell decorated pottery and explained how this work was done; while Mrs ,P. J. Andrew demonstrated the new embroidery, "Wonderweave." The demonstrators were accorded votes of thanks. The hostesses were Mrs N Bagne, and Misses Joan and Nora Barrett.
