GRAIN AND PRODUCE. CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. (Special to the “Guardian.’') CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The potato market is a little firmer owing to a slightly better local inquiry for June deliveries. The demand from the North Island is still very poor. The Waipiata, which left Lyttelton for the north on Monday, took about 5000 sacks. The Karetu, which is expected to follow to-morrow, will probably take a fair quantity owing to its being the last boat for the month. The onion market is lifeless, and there is little movement in grain and seeds. The rain of the last few weeks has interfered with the winter sowing of wheat. ’ / Following are the prices quoted to be paid to farmers, on trucks at country stations, sacks included unless otherwise mentioned. Wheat—Tuscan, 3s 8d; Hunters, 3s lOd; Pearl, 4s (May delivery). Fowl 'Wheat—2s 9d to 2s lOd. Potatoes —White, £2 10s (prompt and June delivery); Dakotas £2 10s prompt and June). Onions —20s a ton. AUCKLAND MARKETS. AUCKLAND, May 29. Potatoes.—Stocks of southern potatoes are fairlyi light at the moment. Last week’s shipment, by the Wingatui was not particularly heavy and this week’s cargo, by the Waipiata, is not expected until Friday. The Pukekolie crop is now being worked out, but it is, likely that supplies from other . areas in the province will be available for several weeks yet. It is reported that fair quantities are still to be marketed from Ohakune and adjacent districts. Quotations at the moment are firm at £6 per ton, through store. Onions.—The position On regard to onions shows no change. Fair quantities are coming up from Canterbury, but for keeping purposes they are only moderate, and have to be sold at a discount compared with Pukekoliegrown. Wheat.—There have been freer offerings of fowl wheat from the south, possibly due to the stringent grading adopted for milling purposes. As a consequence the local trade has been reduced to 4s Bd. Maize —Apparently in sympathy with wheat, the maize position has also developed weakness. Offerings from Gisborne are freer and the local wholesale price has been dropped to 4s 5d per bushel. Pollard and Bran.—The demand for both pollard and bran continues good with full supplies of both available at late-rates. Further orders of Ausrtralian pollard are coining forward, and merchants do not anticipate any hniculty in meeting requirements during tlie next few weeks. Oats—ln sympathy with a weak market in the south local merchants have lowered the price for B Garton oats to 3s 2d. Chaff is steady at late rates.
