MAJESTIC THEATRE. An unshaven and dishevelled Ronald Colman, without his striped trousers, his Oxonian speech or his Chesterfieldian manners, .is the not inconsiderable promise in. In this adventure melodrama by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, Colman is seen as Barry Hunt, a gentleman adventurer, a rogue has seen better days and honester wavs. With a motley crew of pvuiderers, thieves and other 'outcasts he is hiding from the police in a Sahara outpost camp. Cffie of the number, a old Frenchman, is believed to hare hidden his plunder somewhere won the premises, and to worm tins inhumation from him is the individual and collective effort of the group. SCOTTISH CEILIDH. Another enjoyable evening was spent bv a large number ot people m tn Tancred Street Hall last evening when the Ashburton Scottish Society he Ceilidh. The evening was devoted, principally to dancing, to music supplied by Mrs Mitchell’s orchestra. Hie EC’s were Messrs T. McGregor and T. Thompson. A feature of the pio gramme was the old-time supper comprising herrings, potatoes and oatcakes, the gift of the Chief (Mr H. Sinclair).
TENNIS CLUB’S SOCIAL. As a conclusion to the 1933-34 season the Baling Square Methodist Tennis Club held a social function m the school hall last, evening. There was a good attendance of members aud fi ion ? and games and coihpetitions occupied the evening. Trophies won during the season were presented as follow. , Senior open singles, K. G. Fowke (men), Miss D. Fowke (women); 3 uni or open singles. E. C.. Morriss (men), Miss B. H. L. Brown (women); men’s handicap singles (Higgins Cupb K. G. Fowke; women’s handicap singles (Morgan Cup), Miss E. Weston; combined doubles (Frampton Cup), Miss O. Tinker and K. G. Fowke.
