RITUAL KILLING AT MIDNIGHT.
TO ABATE SMALLPOX EPIDEMIC.
(United Press Association —Copyright;. (Received This Day, 9.30 a.in.) CALCUTTA, May 29. A mass sacrifice of animals in order to appease the smallpox goddess tv as carried out at Ellore, in the Madras Presidency, to-day. The offerings included many buffaloes, 500 goats and 500 fowls. The killings occurred at midnight by torchlight. Blood mixed with, boiled rice was taken in a weird procession by thousands of people and offered to the goddess. It was subsequently strewn throughout the town in the belief that the smallpox epidemic would abate.
A previous cablegram from Calcutta stated: Thousands of animals will be sacrificed in Ellore, in the Aladia» Presidency, on. Sunday to appease the Hindu goddess of smallpox. the Society for the Prevention of Animat Sacrifice unsuccessfully appealed to the local magistrate to prevent the slaughter. The society declared that there would be a procession on Sunday to commemorate the decrease of the smallpax epidemic, and that 6000 animals would txjf sacrificed and then bodies heaped on the roads.
