CAUSED OWN DEATH.
SPEEDING MOTOR-CYCLIST
PILLION-RIDER INJURED. (Per Press Association). - DANNEVIRKE, May 26. "Speeding alone caused this regrettable fatality, for which the unfortunate deceased is solely responsible," said the Coroner (Mr W. Dobson, J.P.) at the inquest on Aubury Stanley Smith, motor driver, of Napier, who was killed in a collision with another car, in Dannevirke, on December 10, while riding a motor-cycle. Death was due to shock and concussion, following a fracture of the base of the skull and fractures of the right thigh. The Coroner said that no blame was attachable to the driver of the motorcar, Desmond Michael Maedonald. He commented on the danger of accepting an invitation for a ride from a total stranger, pointing out that the young man, Robert Alan Scott, who had done so and was a pillion passenger at the time of the accident, bad been seriously injured. He was in hospital for 137 days, and was fortunate to be alive.
