BLACK PICTURE
FRENCH VIEW OF GERMANY.
"CLOSER THAN EVER TO WAR."
ALLEGATION OF PREPARATIONS. LEAGUE AS A SAFEGUARD. (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day, 11.40 a.im) , PARIS, May 27. During a discussion of foreign policy 4 members of the Chamber of Deputies painted a black picture of Germany's warlike preparations, one declaring: "Wei'never felt more than to-day that we were closer to war." The Minister for Foreign Affairs (MBarthou) in the course of an important exposition, emphasised the continuity of French foreign policy. He declared that the Disarmament Conference must end with disarmament, not in legalising re-armament, carried out in violation of treaties^ "No-door-to disarmament has been closed," he said. "We think .the League, remains a safeguard to.worldpeace, and have promised to help Mr Hendeisbn. France remains as true to the cause of peace as she remains true to the"cause of the League.". M. Barthou added that the independence of Austria was vital to Euro-* pean peace. It was possible that France and Italy would agree to- a cordial and lasting entente. Russia a entry into the League would _ help peace. France was striving to facilitate a Russo-Polish rapprochement.
