GRASSHOPPER PLAGUE
WHEAT DESTROYED IN CANADA. COUNTERED WITH POISON. (United Press Association—Copyright). MONTREAL, May 26. In an effort to combat the countless billions of grasshoppers which are threatening approximately 48 per cent, of th« wheat yield of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, plans on a gigantic scale have been completed to distribute poisoned bait over a 2000mile front.
The Department's of Agriculture of the three provinces, when announcing the details of the plan, state that the, estimated cost is 750,000 dollars, the great bulk of which will be spent ill Saskatchewan, which is the hardest hit.
Hundreds of stations throughout the territory have been, established to manufacture and distribute the poisoned bait, and posters have been printed outlining the methods to combat the pest.
