FIFTY YEARS SYNE. •■■ (F.rom the "Guardian," May 28,1884). Debating Society.—There was a fair attendance, at the fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Debating Sociey held in the upper room of the library last evening, when the subject of debate was "Vegetarianism." Mr Craighead opened, advancing . arguments -Ifii favour of vegetable diet, dealing with the subject from various points, including that of chemistry. He placed the cause of nearly all diseases to the consumption of animal food. Mr Caygill followed, supporting the negative of Mr Craighead's observations. 'He argued that it was against nature to exclude animal food from tho diet of the' human family. He quoted eminent authorities to show that flesh, was saving force and for climatic and other aeasonsc was necessary to the wellbeing of man. Messrs Hogg and Kilworth supported the president's views' and Messrs Shaw and Farley argued against; the latter leasing his speech on the text "Ail flesh is grass." When put to the vote, Mr 'Caygi.il-?s side gained the day by a large majority, flie subject of debate for next meeting will be: "Is a change of Ministry desirable r" Mr Shaw will take the affirmative and Mr Farley the negative. ' Train The-tr,ain from Ashburton to ' Christchurch yesterday morning was delayed on -its journey through a breakdown in the engine. From information obtained from the passengers it appears that when near the Middletoh Station, about four miles from Christchurch, the eccentric in which one of the connecting rods, worked broke to pieces. The. driver endeavoured to work his engine with the remaining rod, but to no avail. More by way of pastime than with much hopeof success, some of the passengers got out of the carriages and pushed behind. This was Tound to be fruitless, and, after a delay of threequarters of an. hour, another engine arrived from Christchurch to take the train on. .' ■ " ' <
