EIFFELTON. A most enjoyable afternoon was recently spent at the home of Mrs J. P. McQuilkin, when members of the Eiffelton sub-branch of the Plunket Societyi paid her a surprise visit. Just before afternoon tea w-as dispensed, Airs K. Taylor, on behalf of the members, presented Mrs McQuilkin with a crystal rosebowl and plate as a token of their appreciation. Mrs Taylor spoke of her efficiency and untiring energy as president for the past three years, and also thanked her for her generous hospitality extended to all the members in having meetings at her home and so- willingly providing afternoon tea. The winners of the various competitions were Mesdames J. Locks, iShearer, €. Anderson and J. MeQuiikm.

MAYFIELD. The annual meeting of the Mayfield branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the agricultural and pastoral rooms. Mr A. V. Barrett presided ovei a small attendance. The president, m his report stated that an organisei had visited the district during the year • the result had been an increase in the membership of 23. The secretary (Mr A. A. Fleming) reported that the total receipts for the year had been £6l 4s 4d, and expenditure £BO 11s Id. The credit balance at the bank was £35 0s 9d. The secretary ©s granted an honorarium of £5 ss. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr A. V. Barrett; vice-president, Mr G. Johnston; treasurer, Mr J. A. Fleming; secretary, Mr A. A. Fleming. The following remit was forwarded for the provincial conference : —“That we continue our opposition to the lifting of the embargo on the importation of stock from Britain.’” The monthly meeting of, the Mayfield branch of the Women’s Christian. Temperance Union was held in the Presbyterian Church on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Edmonds presided, and led the devotions. A motion of sympathy was carried with Mrs R. E. Mably in her bereavement. The secretary reported that the sum of £l6 had' been collected through catering for the recent dog trials. The sum of 10s was voted to Mr A. Emerson for his assistance during the three days of the trial. The rest of the money is to be equally divided between the local branch of the union and the Mayfield branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. An invitation was extended to the union to attend the annual meeting of the “Y” branch on May 31, when Mrs E. A. Osmers (Methven) will give an address. It was decided to hold hands of hope as soon as it could be arranged. The president rend a paper on the principles of the League of Nations. Afternoon tea was handed round by the members.
