WOMEN ASSAULTED.
AN OFFENDER FINED. (Special to the “Guardian.”) HOKITIKA, May 25. John EdAvard Pedder, aged 27, a grocer’s assistant, was fined £2 10s on each of two charges of assault on young Avomen. The accused attended a dance and later, Avhile under the influence of liquor, he forced his attention on a young woman, whom he saw to her home. He endeavoured to kiss her good-night, but she protested and called out to the occupants of the place Avhere she resided. The accused departed, but returned later. He entered the building and forced his way into the room where the young woman and another girl were. They tried to eject him from the room and called for assistance. The accused, in the meantime, departed. He had made ja, voluntary statement to the police and immediately apologised to the girls. The Magistrate, in imposing the fines, said that he had to protect respectable girls from the attention of men in liquor.
